The Coffee Maker Curse-Do You Have It Too?

!: The Coffee Maker Curse-Do You Have It Too?

Minnesotans are serious coffee drinkers. I have owned dozens of coffee makers and they all failed. Some failed in a few months and one failed in a week. Yep, I am afflicted with the Coffee Maker Curse, something I would not wish on my worst enemy.

The curse started with my Norelco coffee maker. It made excellent coffee, but the coffee maker kept breaking. Twice, I sent it to the factory for repairs. By the time I had packed the coffee maker in a box, cushioned it with newspaper and bubble wrap, and paid the postage, I had almost bought the coffee maker again.

My large Norelco was followed by a series of small coffee makers. I had a Proctor Silex, a Mr. Coffee, a Braun, and odd-named coffee makers from Europe. Every time I unpacked a new coffee maker I was filled with hope. At last, I would have a coffee maker that worked and kept on working. I was wrong.

Following the instructions did not help. I bought white filters, brown filters, gold filters, and cleaned my coffee makers regularly. Some manufacturers recommend a vinegar solution, a process that makes the whole house smell like bad pickles. Other manufacturers recommend commercial coffee maker cleaners. These cleaners are pricey and one cost just a few cents less than the coffee maker.

I am not blaming manufacturers for the pots I dropped. That was my fault. But coffee makers that break in a few weeks are not my fault. The seam on one coffee maker cracked and water spilled all over the counter. The most common failure, however, is the pumping tube. Despite my cleaning efforts the tubes plug up.

A simple design change -- removable pumping tubes -- would solve this problem. Pumping tubes, whether they are flexible or rigid, should only cost pennies to make. Enclose a free replacement tube with each purchase and customer satisfaction ratings will soar.

Though I hoped the Coffee Maker Curse would go away in time it did not. No such luck. My daughter gave me a coffee maker for Christmas. The coffee maker broke two months later. I bought a new one, an inexpensive model with a drip-prevention valve. You guessed it, the valve doesn't work. When I remove the pot to pour coffee liquid splatters on the warming plate. The warming plate hisses at me and I hiss at it.

So here is the challenge for manufacturers: Produce durable coffee makers with replacement pumping tubes. This would be better for the environment and better for consumers. Do this and I will be your friend for life. I will become a walking ad for your product. Let's discuss it over coffee.

Marshall, Michigan - Do You Believe in Magic?

!: Marshall, Michigan - Do You Believe in Magic?

Marshall is the home of the American Museum of Magic. Illusionists such as David Copperfield, David Blaine, Harry Houdini and other are mesmerizing.

You have to make an appointment to visit the American Museum of Magic in Marshall, Michigan. That is what the sign says on the front door. Tours are given by appointment only. The museum contains over one million pieces of memorabilia collected by Mr. Lund before his death. Many of the memorabilia center around Harry Houdini, but other illusionists are also presented. The museum contains many posters. The museum had been opened only to magicians. Now it is open to the general public, by appointment only.

Do not be surprised if no one shows up for your appointment. Mrs. Lund operates the museum. Her not showing up for the appointment is highly unusual, according to the proprietor of the coffee shop next door. She is seventy-five years old. We asked the coffee shop owner to see if someone could make a drive by of her home.

Take a quiet drive around the city. Marshall, Michigan is known for many stately mansions, including the Honolulu House and the Governor to be House. Presently the home of the Marshal Historical society, the "Honolulu House." was built by Abner Pratt in 1860. He was chief justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, 1853-1857, and United States Council to Hawaii (1857-1859) under President James Buchanan. The house is a copy of a house in Honolulu, Hawaii, which Abner Pratt enjoyed.

The Governor to be House was built because Marshall had been considered to be in the running to become the state capital. It lost out to Lansing. The house presently is the headquarters of the Mary Marshall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

How to Save Money by Brewing Coffee at Home!

!: How to Save Money by Brewing Coffee at Home!

Coffee has become America's most popular beverage. How much money a year do you spend on coffee? Let's say most people drop by their local Starbucks on their way to work, to pick up a grande Hazelnut Mocha w/Whip Cream.

That's .90, and assuming most people drop in those 10 cents of change in the tip jar, you've just purchased a .00 drink. Let's take a look at the numbers here.

.00/drink x 5 days/week =
/week x average of 50 weeks/year = 00

Yes, that's right. 00 a year spent on coffee.

And you're probably saying, "But I need my coffee!" And that's probably true. I love my coffee too. But I'm not willing to spend 00 a year on it.

So I found a solution that works for me, and will work for you: Buy an Espresso Machine. Did you know you can easily make your own drinks at home? It's simple, fun, and inexpensive.

A low grade machine such as a Mr. Coffee Espresso Machine costs approximately , yet still makes great coffee. It's perfect for those who want a quick latte before work or after dinner.

Spend on a machine, buy a bottle of your favorite syrup (average 6 bucks), and a 1lb. bag of your favorite coffee roast (average /lb). Assuming you'll buy a few bags of coffee a year, let's just put a price of 0 to get started to brewing your own coffee.

You'll save 0+ a year on coffee. Your machine will last more then a year, so then after the first year, you'll be getting over 1000+ profit by brewing your own coffee at home.

Mr. Coffee Versus Bunn-o-Matic - The Coffee Maker Battle Heats Up

!: Mr. Coffee Versus Bunn-o-Matic - The Coffee Maker Battle Heats Up

For coffee lovers, there are few things more appealing than being met in the early a.m. hours by a perfectly brewed pot of coffee. That first cup sets the mood for your entire day, doesn't it? If it's brewed up right, you'll feel that extra zing in your step from morning till night. However, if that first cup is too strong or too weak, too hot or not hot enough, you quickly find yourself spiraling into a first-class coffee crisis.

So, how do you avoid a coffee catastrophe? It's simple, buy the best coffee maker on the market made especially for your coffee-drinking needs! Sounds simple enough, right? But, who makes the best coffee maker today? In other words, who is the All-Time Champion of Coffee Makers?

Ladies and gentlemen, we'd like to welcome you to our title bout of the day where two mighty coffee making titans - Mr. Coffee and Bunn-o-Matic - will meet in the kitchen to crown the undisputed coffee making champion of the world.

Introducing The Coffee Maker Contenders

In the green corner, we have Mr. Coffee - long-recognized as the undisputed champion of home coffee makers. Affordable with many models to choose from, Mr. Coffee currently has over a dozen models on the market retailing from between .99 to .99. With makers serving up between one and twelve cups, he'll be hard to beat. In fact, Mr. Coffee is in great shape with an amazing array of features and settings, including single serve, speed brew, switch, programmable, and thermal models.

In the red corner, we have the Bunn-o-Matic - king of the commercial coffee making market. Found in restaurants and chosen by baristas around the world, Bunn-o-Matic is known for his professional-grade machines. With a limited variety (e.g., currently seven models, with one single serve and 6-10 cup models), judges will need to pay close attention to the details to see what kind of punch the Bunn-o-Matic packs. One thing is for sure: with a starting price of .95, Bunn-o-Matic definitely tips the scales as a higher-priced option for home consumers.

For those of you who are new to the clash of the coffee makers, here's what the judges will be looking for during the brew-off:

Cup size

How many cups can your coffee maker cook up (say that five times fast)? Most brands today have single-serve and multiple cup models, with 10-12 cups being the upper limit for most home coffee makers.

Timer

If having your coffee pre-made for you when you wake up is important, then a timer is going to be key! Timers allow you to set the time when your coffee maker will start doing its thing and brewing you up your beloved coffee.

Space

If you have unlimited counter space, then this criterion might not matter much to you. But, for those of you for whom counter space is at a premium, deciding upon a model that fits your space as well as your décor might be an important consideration.

But, to truly separate the two competitors, our judges will also be looking closely at the following four areas:

Ease of Use

This is self-explanatory - at 6 a.m., you want a machine that is easy to use

Durability

As you know, coffee makers aren't the most pampered of home appliances. They can get pretty banged up with daily use. Choosing a hardy model is essential.

Ease of Cleaning

Starting with a well-maintained and cleaned pot is one of the best ways to assure yourself of a great cup of coffee day after day.

Style

Yes, in the end, many of us like our coffee makers to look cool. Sure, while it's true that they are simply functional machines, we want these machines to represent our love for coffee.

The fight is on between the top coffee makers in the world. So, who wins the home coffee maker battle? Bunn-o-Matic definitely has significantly higher priced models and less of a home-based selection, but is known for superior performance and durability. Mr. Coffee has a wider range of home models to choose from and most of their machines are significantly less expensive than even the lowest priced Bunn-o-Matic.

In the end, it's a personal choice for you to decide. Remember, a great cup of coffee ends up being more than your coffee maker. Quality water, beans, and the proper grind for your machine all make a big difference in whether your coffee maker and first cup of coffee are winners. Good luck!

In 1991, the show's three production companies — Carson Productions, Worldwide Pants, and NBC Productions — were awarded a Peabody Award, which cited the following: In the past ten years, one show has moved to the position of the leader in late night television in creativity, humor, and innovation. That program is Late Night With David Letterman. As one member of the Peabody Board remarked, "David Letterman is a born broadcaster." He is also a savvy co-executive producer. Part I - How Coffee Bean "Color" Impacts the Flavor Profile of Roasted Coffee

This narrative is the first in a five-part series describing general guidelines on how to conclude ability characteristics of green beans before the cupping analysis.

There are many factors within the stage of picking, drying, grist and grading that can sway the outcome of green bean color, and also the quality.

Mr Coffee Parts

The phenomenon can as well sway the cup acidity, body and flavor. In this narrative we are going to focus specifically on the color of the raw beans after they are processed, graded and ready for roasting.

Part I - How Coffee Bean "Color" Impacts the Flavor Profile of Roasted Coffee

First, the major colors found in caffeinated green beans include*:

* Grayish-blue
* Grayish-green
* Brownish-gray-green
* Brownish-green
* Brown

*These colors are those typically used in international standard classification descriptions.

There are other colors found exterior the standard range. These contain blue beans which are usually the supervene of high moisture content caused by under-drying and, instead of roasting, will bake, resulting in a very flat cup. Yellowish beans are also exterior the boundaries of standard beans.

Grayish-blue

This is the most highly desirable color found in the high ability coffee beans. The latter is obtained by means of sun drying after washing. Along the process of sun drying the coffee is allowed to receive the heat in a gradual way, while the coffee beans are set on a drying table and the air is allowed to percolate around the beans in an even manner.

The parchment coffees which commonly yield a grayish blue color are usually found intact and whole, hence free from any split and open defective beans after the drying process. The moisture content of these types of beans ranges from 8.5% to 10.5%, in both parchment form and after the hulling.

After hulling and grading, coffee beans retained on screens 16, 18 and 21 are coffees of high density and strictly hard beans and reflect a white center cut in every stage of the roasting profile.

At a medium roast, beans with these characteristics will yield a darkish chocolate color (without over roasting), and slightly shiny without an oily exterior (often caused by over roasting). This is the ideal.

Properly dried beans of a grayish-blue color will give a well balanced acidity, full body and a rich flavor free from any aftertaste.

Rapid coffee drying will give a parchment that splits open in the final drying process. The same process will also sway the grain, creating a brownish tinge around the edges. In addition, some of the beans will fade, resulting in a whitish to yellowish color and light in density. In the final analysis rapidly dried coffees have characteristics of light acidity to somewhat lacking acidity, light body and a flat flavor in the cup.

Typically, you'll find some disagreement of color in any coffee lot and the final analysis during cupping will all the time conclude the best fit for your definite use.

Grayish-Green

This is another kind of coffee beans which are usually found to be fairly solid in formation, and high density. Grayish-green beans are usually well dried and free from open parchment.

Beans with these characteristics are commonly found within the coffees that come from South America, Central America, Papua New Guinea and Hawaii.

Grayish-green beans at the medium roast profile will yield a fantastic chocolate color. The cup analysis will usually reflect a rich and plane acidity, heavy body and a mellow flavor.

Brownish-gray-green Brownish-green Brown

Washed green beans which reflect a brownish-gray-green to brown color are the coffees which usually have been picked either at stages of under ripe or over ripe. This color is also formed by scorching heat during sun or mechanical drying, over fermentation. Old warehoused coffee is another factor that can lead to this type of color variation.

Beans of this type of will commonly yield a very light acidity, light body and, normally, overly dominant flavors which can contain any composition of: woody, earthy, fermented, nutty, slightly harsh, bitter, greenish, grassy, potato and medicinal.

These characteristics are often masked by a very dark roast to add body and deaden strong undesirable flavors.

Keep in mind that there are other criteria of green beans that can also lead in varying degrees to the characteristics of acidity, aroma and flavor, including: bean formation, center cut, moisture content and defects. We will be discussing each of these criteria in our upcoming articles.

Coming up next:
