Promotion Mr. Coffee IDS75 Electric Coffee Grinder with Chamber Maid Cleaning System, White

Over All Rating Reviews :
First off, I have to say that many of the people who have complaints about this grinder may not have actually taken the extra few seconds to read the manual and understand how the device works. The grinder does a great job and my coffee is always perfect.

to address some issues that others had:

1. The plastic cleaning blade inside the grinding bowl needs to be manually spun (with your finger) to loosen the packed coffee grounds. Usually a single revolution will accomplish this task, then you can put this coffee in the maker!

2. This grinder makes it easy to get the coffee into your coffee maker -- someone was complaining that it was more difficult to clean or use because it comes apart -- this makes it really easy! Detach the bowl from the motor assembly with a short, counter clockwise turn of the wrist, and do the same with the lid (extremely easy, I assure you) -- then dump the coffee from the grinding bowl into your filter, use your finger to agitate the plastic cleaning blade for a second or two to get as much usable coffee out of the bowl as possible, then wash out the bowl with a little water, and dry it with a towel (it is important to dry it immediately to avoid any chance for oxidation) - and you're done! I am not sure why a previous reviewer was using a spoon or scoop to get the coffee out of the bowl -- that's why it detaches from the base! The bowl is marked on the side so you will know what amount of beans to use -- after a few experiments, it is very easy to judge how high to fill it. I just can't understand how it could be more difficult to clean the bowl when it is separate from the base than to clean a grinder that does not detach from the electrical portion...

2.1. if you need to grind your coffee coarsely for a percolator, you should not be buying whole beans - buy your coffee from in large cans from companies that have television commercials and easy-listening jingles, as the end result is going to end up tasting awful, no matter what, if you put it in a percolator.

3. The power cord - other people have addressed this -- the cord is tucked up inside the bottom of the grinder -- simply pull it out, and it is plenty long.

4. Another reviewer said he preferred a different grinder that shuts off automatically -- this grinder does that as well -- put in the beans, choose your settings with the buttons on the side of the unit, and then hold down the grinding button -- continue to hold the button down until the grinder automatically stops -- it will stop when it has achieved the level of grinding that you selected with the buttons.

5. Lights wasting electricity - the reviewer who wrote that the grinder's lights are just wasting electricity is just a sillypants and wants to nitpick. The reality is this: the 2 LEDs that would be lit up while this device is plugged in would draw an almost nominal level of current. At 3.3vac a 100 Watt light bulb uses 30.3 Amps (30,300mA). At 3.3vac each LED would use 20mA -- so, both LEDs would use, at most, 40mA - which is less than 1/750th the amount the 100W bulb would use. You would have to leave the grinder plugged in and turned on for over a full month for the LED lights inside to use the same amount of current (electricity) used by turning on that 100 watt bulb for a single hour.

I have been using this grinder every day for 3 years along with a swissgold coffee filter (if you are still using paper filters you are just wasting trees and missing out on better tasting coffee...) and I have not had a single problem with it -- it grinds the beans consistently to the settings I punch in, and my yield is a delicious pot every morning.

If you couldn't tell, I am quite happy with this grinder. So buy one already!

Mr. Coffee IDS75 Electric Coffee Grinder with Chamber Maid Cleaning System, White

Over All Rating Reviews :
Recently, my Cuisinart Grind and Brew coffee unit broke and I decided to go for the coffee grinder because the Cuisinart Grind and Brew model tends to have problems. I looked at various grinder and finally decided to purchase this one. Unlike the conventional model, the top unit of the grinder house can be detached for cleaning and puring the ground coffee into the coffee maker filter easily. When I set the unit for medium grinding setting, I can use less coffee in comparison to the use of my Cuisinart Grind and Brew coffee unit. And the good thing is that the power is not too fine to pass thru the filter either. If you have a black color coffee maker, it will fit very well with it. The grinder is not loud when it operates. Overall, I am very pleased with this product.

Interpreter Of Maladies By Jhumpa Lahiri - Book Review

Kudos to Mr... Donno his name. But yes, he speaks English. He calls himself a 'Friend of students' and sells books at Nehru Place, New Delhi at throwaway prices, literally. I got it at Rs 60/-. No, it was not original, but pirated version of the Pulitzer Prize winner book in 2000. Printed, I guess, somewhere in or around Delhi. Thats how I came across Interpreter of Maladies. A collection of short stories by Jhumpa Lahiri, her first one. Nine stories make up the 270 odd pages book, one of the finest collection of short stories I have come across.

The book is rightly sub-titled Stories of Bengal, Boston and Beyond. It captures in words, the feeling called Nostalgia in myriads of ways. How you long for your own country, your own people, your own culture while abroad. How you start comparing with your home everything starting from food, dresses, markets to the way people talk and behave in a party, or in bed. How you wish to go back to your roots. Not because the new place is not good or people are rude or you are fed up with the job. But because you miss the faces you were so used to, or you miss that special Adda with your friends, or you yearn for fresh fish and frown at the lack of variety.

I dont really know whether the author lived in Bengal. But the way little things are presented makes you feel right inside a typical Bengali kitchen, or in a Calcutta fish market, or in that 3-storied building at Dacca, or in that building where Boori Maa lived. Bengali sentiments attached with fish, sindoor and Calcutta are taken care of rather objectively. You feel as if you were not reading a book, but watching a movie.

The characters are real-life. You might have seen them while you were sipping a cup of coffee at the Coffee House, or while working out at the Gym, or in a Railway Station, or your next door neighbour, or your colleague. Or, in some Case, it might be you. Like the estranged couple, or the Bangla Professor in US in times of domestic turmoil, or the infidel executive, or the lady who happily becomes a mistress and then, suddenly, relents having done so.

Some stories take a sudden turn, sometimes tragic, sometimes what you would just like it to turn into. Like the story of two married, yet estranged people over the death of their child. Like the story of an Interpreter(read the story to know what this word means, literally and metaphorically) and a tourist lady when the former interprets the malady of the lady. But unlike the story of Boori Maa.

The only worthless story is that of a couple who keep on finding several 'blessed' objects like statues of Jesus and Mary, or a tablecloth with Jesus and the like. I hate to see such a story in this, otherwise, excellent book. When a story ends, you crave for more. You think 'Why the story ends at all?'. You are not going to stop for anything less than a full length novel on each of the bunch of characters. I guess, I better start with The Namesake now.

Purchase Mr. Coffee IDS75 Electric Coffee Grinder with Chamber Maid Cleaning System, White

Over All Rating Reviews :
If you appreciate good design, do not buy this grinder.
Why?
- It's clunky
- Has way too many unnecessary parts
- The cord is so short that you'll probably have to unplug it every time to pour your coffee in your basket
- If you use the hinged lid to pour the ground coffee through, you will end up with grounds on your counter
- The chamber maid thing doesn't clean all of the grounds out
There are probably other bad points I could think of, but I'll save you the pain. On the up side, this thing actually grinds coffee pretty well. It's just not elegant, in the least bit. Stick with something simpler.

Mr. Coffee IDS75 Electric Coffee Grinder with Chamber Maid Cleaning System, White This instant

Over All Rating Reviews :
I've been using this coffee grinder for 2 years now and can say I'm happy with it. It does a fine job making drip and coarse grinds for the once-every-other-day or so coffee drinker.

The chamber maid system works by rotating the three plastic side arms on the inside, scraping the side of the chamber off. I usually just rotate the top of the lid back and forth a few times, which works well enough.

The entire grind chamber's diameter is also slightly smaller than the diameter of my french press, so it's even easier to pour the grinds into the press. I simply remove the lid of the grinder, tilt the the french press and invert the grinder, pouring the grinds into press with no mess.

I've also always hand washed it, considering the blade blocks alot of the inside. As a result, I usually clean it out every 2-3 grinds and the inside of the ginder still looks brand new.

While it will not have the uniformity of a disc grinder, I've rarely had any problems with the coarse setting and my french press(8 cups, but I rarely drink the full amount). I set it to 6 cups and coarse setting, letting it run it's full cycle. The last half-cup may have a "residue" taste but I usually leave a little for just that reason.

If you want to try and see how much better freshly ground coffee is, try this machine out now. You won't regret it.

Over All Rating Reviews :
Our good friends bought this for us last month and it works great! We had talked about getting a coffee grinder but we didn't see any under $50.
Our friends set it up for us and showed us how to use it, since they also have one. So, like the previous reviewer, I did not know about the cord storage and was operating it in tight places. Probably why they add the operating instuctions and tell you to read it first, huh? :)
Anyway, if you are looking for an inexpensive coffee grinder that grinds perfectly run out now and get the Mr. Coffee Electric Grinder!

Best Prices Mr. Coffee IDS75 Electric Coffee Grinder with Chamber Maid Cleaning System, White

Over All Rating Reviews :
After the first use it was apparent this coffee bean grinder did not live up to its hype. The flip-up lid has to be held open to dispense the grounds or the top must be removed entirely and its not that easy to put back on when one is half awake. The blade takes up so much space in the bowl that its difficult to extract all the grounds with a scoop or spoon. The plastic device that "cleans" the bowl does nothing that I could not do with my finger. The grinder has to be unassembled in 3 parts to actually clean the bowl (remove the lid piece, remove the center piece, and wipe the bottom compartment). Its also not as quiet as the advertising would lead you to believe. I already own a GE model grinder that has is a lock-tite lid and a grinder bowl, which works just fine. The GE model also has a grind setting from coarse for percolators to fine for expresso. It also has an automatic switch that shuts the unit off. GE model cost $9.95 versus $30 plus for the Mr. Coffee model. Recommendation: Go with less expensive model and spend money on good coffee beans.

End Tables - How to Clean Candle Wax and Other Spills Off Them

As the holidays head back around, those who do all the entertaining are getting ready for houses full of family and friends that seem to be there daily until the season closes. If the house to be happens to be your house, chances are there will be a few slips and spills along the way that may leave some of your furniture begging for help.

Where should you look first for post holiday damage? End tables. Since end tables are always out there for people to put something on, lean on or toss something towards, they are often the first places to see damage from holiday festivities.

If you're smart, you have taken a little extra time to try and protect them before the holiday season gets underway. There are tablecloths made to fit any sized table, even little ones, and these can save you a lot of grief down the road. Another option is to put coasters or placemats on the parts of the end tables that are likely going to get the most use.

No matter what you do, there is still a threat of some kind of damage. So the question becomes, how do you fix that damage?

Candle Wax

No holiday get together is complete without some scented holiday candles as part of the decorations. While candles in themselves are usually just fine, once you bring people into the mix, anything can go wrong. From bumping the table to waving their arm while talking and knocking the candle over, there are any of a number of reasons candle wax may spill on to your end tables. If this happens, don't panic. Step away from the table and leave it alone.

A lot of people try to wipe up the wax right away. This is only going to make things worse. Instead, leave it alone and let it dry. Once it has cooled and completely hardened (you may as well wait until the party is over then deal with it) bring some of the left over party ice out of the freezer. Rub the ice over the wax until it becomes cold and very hard.

Now it is brittle and you should be able to use any of your plastic kitchen spatulas to pop the pieces of wax off of the surface and toss them away. Now put a little polish down and your end tables should look as good as new.

Water Stains

If you get water stains from someone inadvertently setting a cup on your end tables, it is not the end of the world. Once the offending glass has been removed, leave the table alone. Let it complete dry (often a day or so is good) then use mayonnaise and rub it into the water spot (make sure it is real mayonnaise, not something similar). The oils in the mayonnaise will re-nourish the wood and should remove the unsightly spots. It is important to do this lightly and sparingly. You don't want to leave any of the oily mayonnaise on your end tables or you could end up with oil spots to go with your old water spots.

A Unique Marketing Spin for a Coffee Shop

Three business partners contacted me about creating a marketing plan for a coffee shop that they were opening in Greenwich Village in New York City. They had already leased a 3000 sq. foot space, which is very large for a coffee shop. They had not worked out what type of food or coffee they would serve. The location was too large for it to survive as just a coffee shop something extra would have to be added.

I met with the three partners where I discussed my concerns about there new business venture. I convinced them to follow a plan that I created that would solve the extra space problem for them. Since they had already signed the lease on the location that was to large to succeed as just a coffee shop I created a plan for the coffee shop to be used as a place for community service groups, discussion groups, art and theatre groups, and special interest groups.

I arranged for the coffee shop to operate a two-prong strategy. In the morning it will offer coffee, cappuccino, and breakfast muffins and an assortment of pastries to the people in the morning, 65% who are professional. After 9:30 A.M. the coffee house will strive to become a meeting place for various community groups, organizations, associations, and a place for college students to meet after classes. The coffee shop will have a part time program director who will work with the various groups to help facilitate community meetings and set up interesting forums and discussion groups, and to provide other entertainment for the college students.

I conducted some research on successful coffee shops and found that the espresso machines contribute well over 50 percent to a coffee shop's revenue and even more to its profits. The shops with the best tasting drinks did five to ten times the business of shops with average tasting espresso. To capitalize on this the coffee shop should try to get its espresso drinks to over 50 percent of the drinks served. To accomplish this, the coffee shop set up a separate espresso station, with instruction on how to make a great espresso. The coffee shop will set its pricing approximately 25 percent below typical Starbucks' pricing.

The key to the coffee shop is the merchandising and taste of its specialty drinks, which involves having the right coffeemaker and coffee, and people who understand the art of making good coffee. I suggested that the coffee shop purchased a high-end cappuccino coffeemaker that has a shiny copper and bronze exterior that can be set out in a separate station to attract interest to specialty coffees. Two employees along with the manager were trained in the proper technique of making specialty coffee drinks.

I worked with the part time program and sales director with finding groups and creating groups that will hold meetings in the coffee shop. A discount was offered to any group or individual who would bring in groups. I created a web site explaining what the coffee shop has to offer, and what meetings are taking place and how they can attend these meetings. The coffee shop will send out coupons to groups offering a 25-percent-off discount.

I bought a list from a list broker of organizations, associations, and local community groups in the area. I wrote solicitation letters to them explaining what services the coffee shop had to offer. I created online discussion groups that would involve potential clients for the coffee shop. Articles were written for on line publication for the organizations, associations, and local community groups that held meetings at the coffee shop. These articles contained links to the web site for the coffee shop that would list the upcoming events and discussions that would be held at the coffee shop. Print ads were also taken out in a small local publication that the targeted market reads.

After about 5 months the results of these marketing efforts had paid off. The coffee shops morning business was doing 10 percent better that was forecasted. The coffee shop had 8 regular groups, organizations, and associations holding weekly meetings in the coffee shop. I got permission from the clients who are using the coffee shop for meetings to use there names in the next set of ads that will run, and on the new web site. You must promote your success to get new business.

How To Gain Respect

There's a secret to gaining respect - one that I had the good fortune to learn early in my career - and from a most improbable source. The secret to getting respect is to give respect.

Read on to see how that lesson was taught to me by a very special person.

Early in my career I was Branch Manager of a temporary help service. The largest part of our business was done in the Labor Division. The workforce was made up of day laborers - men who had fallen on the hardest of times. They were paid by the hour, and could receive a daily draw against wages earned. For most of them, working and getting the draw was the difference between having food and shelter or going hungry and sleeping in the Mission - or worse.

Every morning at 5:30 AM our office would open, and in would file the men looking for work. There were as many as a hundred who waited, drank free coffee, and hoped to be assigned and dispatched to a job. Many were assigned - some were not.

Early morning was a time when lots of bad things could happen - anger at not getting assigned - anger at perceived insults - anger at life - and anger at being treated poorly by the full time staff. The result had been a number of fist fights, knife fights, and one attempted shooting. Those problems resulted in a decline in business. I was sent there to correct the situation.

Our product was the labor that these men performed. It was in our best interests to maintain a positive relationship with our own people. Unfortunately, many men left for jobs feeling angry, patronized and disrespected. Some never showed up at their assignments, others walked off the jobs, some forged their time tickets.

Observing the situation for a week I could understand why the men felt that way. They were patronized - they were treated as the bottom of the barrel - they were not given any reason to feel valued. And when one was publicly humiliated - and that happened too often - they all felt that humiliation. The only thing most of these men had left was a shred of self respect - or at least the need to feel respected. When that need for respect was abused, when it was not recognized, bad things happened.

The first step to change occurred when my boss gave me a sign to put up in the office- visible only to the full time staff. It said "There but for the grace of God, go I." A constant reminder of the thin line between good fortune and bad fortune.

And then we set up four rules that full time staff were required to follow:

1 - Every man who showed up for work, regardless of his condition or qualifications was to be addressed as "Mister" followed by his last name. First names could be used once the person was known. The use of any abusive name, description or nickname was prohibited

2 - Any discipline would be done confidentially, and without the use of abusive and demeaning terms

3- No assignments that were known to be unsafe would be accepted

4 - Assignments would be given on the basis of length of service, ability, past performance and availability.

Those were the rules. Some full time staff had a problem with these simple rules - they were replaced.

Into this environment walked a man named Riley Bentley. Mr Bentley was an African American - like about half of our workforce. He was big, muscular and an intimidating looking and acting man. He had a silver earring long before they were popular, and he had a "keep away from me " manner. He was sober, he had no problem filling out the application, he looked you right in the eye. He was hired. From the first day, every job he was sent on resulted in excellent reports. He would come back every night, get his draw, and leave. No talk, no socializing - nobody messed with Mr Bentley.

He worked for us for about six months, then, like so many others, he stopped showing up. We had customers tell us if he came back they wanted to know - so they could get him back.

After a three month absence, Mr Bentley walked back in. I was running the Labor Office - it was hard to get and keep full time staff who would obey the rules and treat the men properly, and when they left or were fired, I filled in. I was glad to see Mr Bentley and I told him so. He had lost some weight, but he was still the strongest, hardest working man we had. One night, Mr Bentley came back to the office just before 6 PM - closing time. He looked me right in the eye and said I could call him Riley. I said that he should call me Andy, and we shook hands on it. He walked with me to my car after I had closed up - I asked him if he needed a ride - he said no and kept walking. That became a regular thing. He would arrive at the office just before closing time after working hard all day - and then chat with me and then walk me to my car and head off into the night.

And then Riley was gone - and I hoped he had found a full time job - he deserved one.

A few months later Riley was back, thinner, but still as strong as ever. I noticed he perspired a lot, even though it was fall and cold and he did not wear a jacket. While he was gone we had gone through two new full time staff - and I was back to opening and closing the Labor Office. Riley resumed coming in every night and spending time leaning on the counter and looking out to the street while we talked and I took care of business. Part of the business was paying the men in cash. We kept a large sum of money in small bills for that purpose. We had a safe but it was so busy during the after work hours that the money was in the safe, but the safe was kept unlocked. Anyone could have come in and held me up. Riley could have turned me upside down and taken the money and there would have been no way for me to prevent it. I think Riley read my mind. One night he told me the reason he always stayed until I locked up and why he walked me to my car was to thank me for showing him respect - and his thanks was to provide me with his personal protection. I was ashamed for my concerns - and glad I had Riley - our office was in a very tough part of town.

Riley worked a few more weeks - he seemed to be in distress when he came in at night - perspiring heavily, shivering, but he persisted. He would not discuss his physical condition, and he would never accept a ride or any other kind of help.

And then he was gone. A few weeks later one of our regular men came in and told me Riley had been found in his room - in a chair - and he'd been dead about a week. I was stunned, and saddened, and sorry about the loss of my friend - because we were friends, in our own special way. Riley had given me his protection as his way of expressing his respect. I had given him respect because it just made sense - on a personal and business level, to recognize the humanity of our people. I was repaid a hundredfold for that by Riley.

Ever since that time, Riley Bentley is in my prayers - and he always will be.

Riley taught me the secret to gaining respect. The secret has stayed with me since that time. It's pretty simple. The secret is you get respect by giving respect. I will be forever grateful to Riley for that lesson.

There are other elements to gaining respect, such as keeping your word, making good on commitments, honoring what you promise. But aren't they all part of giving respect? I think so - giving respect is the cornerstone to getting respect.

In your own life, take the time to recognize people that you may have passed by. There's a saying " The true measure of a person is how they treat someone who can do them no good nor any harm." We all can profit from remembering that saying, and making it part of our daily self talk and behavior. And if you're really lucky, maybe you'll find a Riley Bentley in your life.

Start today.

Davos Open Forum 2010 - Switzerland: Misfit or Model?

www.weforum.org 28.01.2010 Switzerland has been criticized lately On the one hand, Switzerland's direct democracy is a showpiece; on the other hand, it unleashes worldwide consternation. International pressures on bank secrecy lead to concessions in the exchange of fiscal information. The accusation of cherry-picking comes up regularly. Does Switzerland have to fear for its reputation and economy? Did Switzerland react accordingly to the international pressure on tax issues? What consequences will this have on Swiss diplomacy and its role as a mediator in international conflicts? This session is co-organized with the Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches (SEK-FEPS).
